BACKGROUND
Jyoti was born into comfort and riches, the second daughter of the noble House Melanthios. Her older sister, Elina, was the favorite of the family, but at first it didn't matter too much. After all, she had servants at her beck and call, and no material good was unaffordable.
But as the saying goes, money can't buy happiness, and the disparity between her and her sister became harder and harder to ignore. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't earn her parents' love, nor move out of her sister's shadow.
At 15, her parents married her off to a noble of a nearby territory, an attempt to gain more power and influence within their kingdom. Despite holding no love, not even like, for her husband, things weren't terrible for her initially... and then he plunged the kingdom into war, and she quickly became known as the warmonger's bride. Again, there was nothing she could do to shake this opinion of her - not without risking the wrath of her husband. She complied to survive, and still died not even a year later during an assault on their castle.
That could've - and maybe should've - been where her story ended. A sad tale of a younger sister who lived and died in her sister's shadow, lacking the love from her parents she needed to flourish. But a being known as The One took pity on her, and offered her a second chance. She'd tried so hard, but fate had been cruel to her, and now her life was fading much too quickly. Perhaps in the next life she could be happier.
With that belief, she began a new life on a different plane of existence. Her circumstances were initially similar - second daughter of a well off noble family, older sister Elina being the apple in her parents' eyes - but eventually, a very, very big deviation occured. Elina died in an accident, and suddenly Jyoti was her parents' only child.
At first, she was happy. She got what she wanted! Her parents had no choice but to care about her! But once again, once she got older and the right influential man set his eyes on her, her parents were ready to cast her aside without a second thought, and certainly without hearing her thoughts on the matter. In a fit of rage and a flare of magic, she killed both of them. Filled with both peace and remorse, she became head of her house by virtue of being the only surviving member, and turned down the proposal. ... only to die a few years later in yet another power struggle.
She didn't bother sticking around with her family the third time. The moment she could make it on her own, she took whatever valuables she could shove in a bag and left. She struggled at first to find her footing, being away from all the luxuries she'd been used to before, but with time she began making a name for herself. For the first time, she felt like other people liked her... a fact she mostly cherished, but also used to her own advantage to orchestrate another "accident" for Elina.
As luck would have it, though, she fell gravely ill while trying to use her magic for good, and the "healer" in town had a sort of... fascination with her. The illness took her, but the healer simply brought her back with necromancy, then spread news about her passing so she could be alone with Jyoti.
The days blurred together quickly. Her body, weakened by the illness, never stayed upright and alive for longer, but the nercomancer didn't seem to mind. Each resurrection was more painful than the last, and each time she felt less and less like herself. In a lapse of revivals, The One managed to rescue her soul and, again, taking pity on her, sent her off into another life... which, at this point, was the last thing she wanted.
She didn't want to keep going, but she didn't want to die either. She wanted to feel alive somehow, some way, despite feeling so numb. The results... weren't pretty. Despite having no magic to fall back on, when she left her fourth life it was with a very impressive body count.
Now in her fifth life, magic at her fingertips once more thanks to yet another sorocide (it was her fault for being born with magic and having the same interests as her, as far as she's concerned), she indulges in all the things she wants. After all, why do what's right when there's a literal god in her corner? She'll do whatever it takes to feel satisfied with herself... even if, deep down, her desires are a bit more complex than that.
